Make it stick

• Email beats phone. A dated email is proof; a phone call is a memory. If they insist on phone-only cancellation, email anyway stating you attempted to cancel — the paper trail matters.
• Gyms in Ontario: personal-fitness contracts have specific protections under the Consumer Protection Act — including cooling-off rights on new contracts and rules against automatic long renewals.
• Telecom: under the CRTC's Wireless Code you can cancel at any time — early-exit charges are capped and phased out over the contract, and cancellation takes effect the day you request it.
• Watch the next bill. Charges after your effective date are disputable with your credit card as unauthorized recurring billing.
